The course was designed by Dr Nick Bielenberg, who prior to that was responsible for a fine piece of work at Luttrellstown Castle. It opened for play in 2002 and has been the recipient of much praise ever since. The course was built to full USGA specifications on a particularly good draining piece of land. Over 100km of drains were laid using the most modern techniques for bunker drainage and inland fairway drainage resulting in a course with a links like feel – playable all year round using full tees and greens.
The set up of the course aims to meet the needs of golfers of all standards, whilst managing to offer a charming passage through some of the most picturesque countryside in Ireland. The philosophy in designing the course was that it should start with the easier holes where an errant shot is not too severely punished and the build to the far more demanding holes at the finish. This approach sustains the players interest and keeps them in the competitive hunt in stroke play. The last four holes will decide the competition, sort the winners from the ‘if onlys’! If you can play the last four holes of South County in fewer strokes than your handicap allows, we need to have a word with your Handicap Secretary. Water is in play on only 15th and 16th but the 17th (Index 1) has enough hazards without water. 18 is a deceptively simple hole, a dogleg right to a 2 tier green but reaching the green in regulation isn’t even half the battle.
The uniquely designed clubhouse nestles among trees offering a haven behind the 18th green. It offers outstanding facilities for golfers, including a bar and dining facilities.
